Cinematography Term Papers

Cinematography refers to the art of motion-picture photography. It is the technique of movie photography that includes both the shooting and development aspects of a film. A camera first captures a scene by taking a number of still pictures at regular intervals (many times a second). A projector is then used to flash these pictures on a screen at the same frequency. This causes an image on the screen that appears to move. This illusion occurs because of the persistence of vision of the human eye.

It involves the constitution of a scene, lighting, camera angle, and addition of special effects to achieve the photographic images as intended by the director. Some of the most distinguished cinematographers include Nestor Almendros, Gregg Toland, and Sven Nykvist.

Movie cameras usually take still photographs at the rate of 24 per second. These photographs are sharp (have high resolution) and when superimposed, they give the illusion of uniform motion and a steady image on the screen.

The first paid exhibition of motion picture occurred on December 28, 1895 in Paris, France. This was Sortie de l'usine Lumière à Lyon by the Lumière Brothers. This marked the birth of cinema and Paris soon rose as the capital of cinematography.

In the starting, the cinematographer also acted as the director and the person responsible for shooting the scene. As technology evolved however, a clear need emerged for a specialist in the field and the separation of the director and the cinematographer.

The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) was formed in 1919 in Hollywood, which by that time had become the new center of the world for cinematography. Its primary aim was to acknowledge the cinematographer's contribution to motion picture making and to protect and advance the rights of cinematographers.

Several aspects have to be taken into account during motion picture making. These include:

  • Film stock and laboratory work
  • Filters and Lens
  • Aspect ratio and framing
  • Lighting
  • Camera movement
  • Special effects
